Quit Smoking for A Day

Today is the Great American Smokeout. Every year, the American Cancer Society (ACS) sponsors this event to encourage smokers to quit smoking for one day. The expectation is that by quitting, even for one day, that individual is taking an important step toward a healthier life.

According to the ACS, lung cancer is the leading cancer death among men and women. The majority of lung cancer deaths in men (~87%) and women (~70%) are believed to be the result of smoking.  Smoking also causes cancers of the larynx, mouth, sinuses, pharynx, esophagus, and bladder. In addition, cancers of the pancreas, ovary, cervix, colon/rectum, kidney, stomach, and blood have a higher prevalence among smokers.
