“Pre-Existing” is a Dirty Word

If you’ve ever had to deal with a health insurance company, chances are you’re at least somewhat familiar with the term “pre-existing condition.” Depending on which company and which policy you have (or had), the very definition of “pre-existing condition” can vary quite a bit and get more complicated than the actual condition itself.

If you boil it down to the basics, though, a pre-existing condition is simply this - a health problem you had before the date your health coverage began. And when you (or a family member) are told by your insurance agent to expect that “denial of coverage for a pre-existing condition” letter in the mail, that’s when “pre-existing” becomes a dirty word.
